Outdoor living in DeBary
DeBary is a city in southwestern Volusia County along the northern bank of the St. Johns River, between Orlando and Daytona Beach. It incorporated at the end of 1993. The area is known for Gemini Springs Park, a 210-acre park with two springs, and DeBary Hall, a historic riverside estate built in 1871 that is now a county historic site. Interstate 4 and U.S. 17-92 connect it to the rest of the region.
Drainage comes first near the river
Lots near the river, Lake Monroe, and the springs can include low areas that hold water after summer storms. On those properties, the order of questions matters:
- Where does water go now? Watch the yard during a heavy rain.
- Where can it go? Identify swales, outlets, and slopes that can carry water away.
- What's the soil? Wetter soils may need a different base design.
- Then design the space — patio, deck, or walk — around those answers.
The drainage guide explains each step.
Projects that suit DeBary homes
- Back patios that replace small original slabs and finally shed water away from the house — see paver patios.
- Driveways rebuilt on a base designed for vehicles — see paver driveways.
- Pool-deck surfaces that replace worn coatings — see pool-deck pavers.
- Garden paths that connect the yard and stay firm in wet seasons — see walkways & garden paths.
Planning a project in DeBary
- Confirm jurisdiction — City of DeBary or unincorporated Volusia County.
- Start HOA review early where it applies.
- Call before you dig. Florida law requires notifying Sunshine 811 at least two full business days before digging.
